"At least 25 people have died in the floods caused by record-high rains that have shocked the nation. Local news and social media users in Henan province posted dozens of images and videos online of cars bobbing in floodwater like apples, harrowing rescues in fast-moving torrents, and pale, soaked flood victims crumpled on subway station floors." This message is reported from United News Post.
The News of the torrential rains in Zhengzhou on the 20th swept across China, even the world. As water flooded all corners of the city, messages of "trapped, distress, perseverance, rescue, mutual aid" flooded everyone's WeChat moments and the media. The storm connected people who had never met before. Everyone had only one wish: "I hope you are all well."
But this extreme phenomenon is not only in China. Not long ago, Western European countries such as Germany were hit by severe flooding, with a death toll of at least 180. While these countries are battling the "floods of the century," parts of the United States and Canada suffer from heatwaves and record-breaking wildfires. As it is said, "While Gentry longs for rain, the more than 5 million residents of Zhengzhou are desperate for the clouds to leave." Why are there so many extreme weather disasters?
Suppose we link the floods in Germany, the torrential rains in Henan, and the rare heat in the USA. The whole of humanity is bound together in a community of a shared future, and the risks posed by global climate change are already endangering all the countries. An increase in extreme heat and rainfall events has alarmed. I can't help wondering, "If we can't prevent disasters, can we minimize the damage?" I think the answer is absolute "Yes." From governments to private, from public officials to common people, we can all do something about it. "Protect the planet, protect the home." It should never be just a slogan but needs to be acted upon by each one of us.
Some experts have given several opinions.
I. Upgrade the flood control standard and strengthen the infrastructure construction. It is the basis.
II. Optimize the forecasting and early warning systems. Let the people recognize in advance that there will be heavy rainfall and the possibility of flooding. So they can take precautions and actions.
III. Increase the nationwide pre-event planning, emergency responses, and live training, so people will know what level of risk they have to deal with, what to do in such extreme cases to save their lives and minimize property damage.
And last but not least, to remember time alone does not heal; the right actions heal.
